Video: Fasching in Munich 2018
Fasching is Munich’s version of Carnival. Fasching is celebrated mainly in the Catholic parts of Germany. It has different names in different areas, for example, Karneval, Fastnacht or Fastnet. Fasching is only the name used in and around Munich.
“Fasching” comes from the medieval word “vaschnc”, in present-day German “Fastnacht” and relates to the fasting period, which begins immediately after Fasching. On Fasching Sunday there is ‘München Narrisch’, or Mad Munich, where thousands hit the streets to party dress up in masks and weird costumes. Munich’s Fasching has its origins in dancing and pageantry and the tradition is continued to the date with celebrations such as parades and costume balls.
